Mission: : El Centro del Cardenal works to improve the human, social and economic conditions of the community, particularly Latinos, via empowerment through quality education, support services and advocacy. El Centro is committed to seeking creative avenues to respond to student needs as they are identified or as they originate from the community.
El Centro del Cardenal’s Youth Education Program is committed to providing young men and women, ages 15-20, the opportunity to earn either a high school diploma or a GED in a nurturing environment that values and supports them. Each student is required to maintain a portfolio and participate in group activities. Young Men’s and Women’s groups are offered weekly. Students are actively involved in Project Groups which include performing dance, health education, food and culture, community activism, and drama (in collaboration with City Stage Theater Company).
El Centro del Cardenal curriculum is designed to incorporate career exploration, employment programming, and educational services. Also included in the program are basic skills remediation, GED preparation, core high school courses and college preparation. Spanish is a required course for all students in the BPS diploma program.
The El Centro Youth Education Program strives to have participants feel responsible for their actions, be productive in a work environment, be culturally aware, cope with personal issues, and become self sufficient. To achieve these goals, El Centro has substantial counseling resources in the GED and regular BPS programs as well as a Young Parents Program to provide comprehensive services to pregnant and parenting teens.
