Mission: The mission of Ostiguy High is to provide a safe, sober and supportive school environment in which youth in recovery from addiction can develop the skills and strengths needed for personal, academic, vocational and community success.
In the Ostiguy High School program, four Boston Public School teachers provide classroom instruction in the areas of English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Math. Additional classes in the areas of Health and Wellness, Life Skills, Film and Media, Art, Theater, Photography, Current Events, Senior Seminar, and Physical Education are also offered on a weekly basis.
In addition to earning diplomas, the students are expected to think about and develop plans for higher education, and/or training or employment with the school counselor. Weekly Senior Seminar classes are held to help facilitate this process. Students have the opportunity to visit local colleges, universities, and the TERI College Access Center. They receive assistance in the college admissions process which includes: SAT registration and preparation, scholarship and financial aid searches, and help with writing college essays and understanding the enrollment process.
As a result of the collaboration with the Cushing House/Gavin Foundation, William J. Ostiguy High School is able to provide clinical groups and access to other treatment options. The Cushing House/Gavin Foundation provides a full-time certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor who facilitates all groups. Students participate in a minimum of three mandatory groups meeting per week as part of Ostiguy High School curriculum. Attendance at a minimum of 2 Alcoholics Anonymous/Narcotics Anonymous meetings (or equivalent outside activity) per week is also required.
Admission Requirements:
Students can be referred to Ostiguy by school personnel, parents, court/state agencies, drug and alcohol treatment agencies, other community based youth programs, and residential programs. Referrals must be supported by the student’s local school district and students must interview with the Ostiguy High team prior to admission. Students must also complete an assessment of basic skills and provide necessary documentation including transcripts in order to verify graduation requirements. All students who enroll in Ostiguy High must be committed to and participate in an on-going recovery program. As part of this process students have to be alcohol and drug free for at least 30 days prior to admission to the school and be committed to an individual plan of recovery.
