Mission: The mission of Greater Egleston Community High School is to help our students see themselves as capable and resilient achievers. Our goal is to educate our young adults so they are well prepared to access opportunities in their future. In keeping with our school’s values, it is imperative that we support the adult development of our students by teaching them the importance of responding to life's challenges with confidence, compassion for others, and integrity.
Greater Egleston Community High School (GECHS) is a small pilot school within the Boston Public Schools. Its mission is to promote the development of student scholars who achieve through a variety of academic challenges. The school offers a supportive environment where 110 students, ages 16-21, learn the academic, communication and life skills necessary for successful futures. A holistic approach to teaching helps the staff to know our students well so that they acquire academic success and cultivate character-building life skills.
GECHS prepares and supports all students for a successful transition into higher education institutions, vocational training programs or other career paths. This is achieved by:
- Providing an inclusive educational setting to meet the needs of students with a diverse range of learning styles, including students with special education needs;
- Focusing professional development for teachers on how to improve learning skills and broaden knowledge in all content areas;
- Assisting seniors with graduation requirements and meeting goals outlined in their Senior Action Plan, which supports their transition into college or other choices;
- Providing counseling, mentoring, and peer collaboration projects in small advisory groups;
- Facilitating community service internships for students at various organizations, schools and agencies throughout the Boston area.
In the past few years more students have selected GECHS as their “first choice” school. We are pleased that the mission to align academic performance standards with instruction has resulted in a higher rate of academic achievement.
