Mission: At Crittenton we know that education leading to a good paying job helps both the individual and the community. We specialize in offering at-risk young men and women the educational opportunities they need to achieve economic self-sufficiency. Emphasizing literacy, problem solving, communication skills, and practical work-based learning, Crittenton offers students the opportunity to improve their basic academic skills and earn their academic credential.
At Crittenton, we understand that traditional school settings don’t work for everyone. Our program is geared toward Boston residents, ages 16-21, who have dropped out of school but are interested in furthering their education. Crittenton’s holistic approach treats each student as an individual and a whole person. We recognize the importance of support services paired with the core educational components, and therefore, in addition to the classroom instruction, offer a variety of career, college, and life skills services with the assistance of our partners.
Focused on Academics
Students attend courses for at least 4 hours per day in Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading, and Writing to help them prepare for the GED test. The program provides individual attention in small classes of 6-12 students with experienced teachers. Students are placed in classes appropriate for their academic skill and comfort level. Additionally, students are given one-on-one tutoring, provided by local college students, and have access to a 13-station computer lab with self-directed GED software.
Focused on Support
Crittenton students often face challenges such as homelessness, teen pregnancy, and prior negative school experiences. Case Managers support each student according to their individual strengths and needs. Our Student Advisory Council and weekly Town Hall Meeting empower students to make decisions and be part of a community. Other support services include:
Focused on the Future
We provide weekly workplace skills classes, career exploration activities, job placement assistance, college and financial aid counseling, resume writing and interview practice, and follow-up services for one year.
