Mission: City Roots is committed to providing Boston’s at-risk youth with a challenging high school educational experience in a student-centered, holistic learning environment that provides preparation for success in higher education and the work force.
The City Roots program design integrates BPS teaching standards with the Diploma Plus portfolio model. The Diploma Plus model is a unique and innovative curriculum which utilizes competency-based work, the creation of student portfolios to demonstrate mastery of skills, intense support for students and the opportunity for internships and enrollment in college classes. Students remain in City Roots for two years working towards college readiness through SAT prep, research projects, and senior seminars which focus on college placement and career readiness. City Roots works closely with parents, social workers, probation officers, and guidance counselors to assure student success. Through collaboration with the University of Massachusetts at Boston, City Roots students are mentored by students and staff advisors to learn college readiness skills. In addition, Boston Centers for Youth and Families provides City Roots students with opportunities in leadership training programs, after school employment, and community service opportunities. Since 1978 City Roots has maintained an excellent rate of graduating students and preparing them for their next steps.
