Founded in 1995, Boston Day and Evening Academy (BDEA) is a Horace Mann Charter School and the first diploma-granting, public day and evening high school in the City of Boston. BDEA’s mission is to provide its students with a high-quality educational experience. The school celebrates the uniqueness of each student while also fostering a solid sense of shared community. Through an innovative competency-based curriculum, BDEA students gain understanding and skills aimed at meeting their present and future needs as critical and creative thinkers, independent learners, and active citizens.

Because of its small size, the school is able to give students the important social-emotional and educational attention that they need to be successful. Students and staff know each other well. Teachers work collaboratively on curriculum development, problem solving, and program development to best meet the needs of students.

A yearly essential question informs and shapes learning at the school. The essential question does not have one answer; rather, students grapple with the complex issues and consequences of asking important and difficult questions. Through classroom work, portfolio reviews, and interaction with visiting authors, artists, and public figures, the essential question is examined from many perspectives. Students present original projects developed through the essential question at an annual symposium.

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS
Boston Day and Evening Academy (BDEA) admits students on a rolling admissions basis because of its unique population of students. Students can apply throughout the school year through a variety of ways including:

• BPS Guidance departments
• An application form from the school's website: www.bacademy.org
• A visit to the school

Students must be registered within Boston Public Schools in order to be enrolled in BDEA. It is important to note that Boston Day and Evening Academy (BDEA) targets students who have not been successful in traditional schools. The application process at Boston Day and Evening Academy spans four to six weeks.

Day Program Requirements

• Students must reside in the City of Boston and meet all residency requirements of the Boston Public Schools
• Preference given to siblings of students currently enrolled in BDEA
• Students have reached the age of 16 or above by September 1 of the year they enroll
• Students have not yet attended ninth grade
• Students have not successfully completed 8th grade benchmarks
• Parent/guardian must sign school compact

Evening Program Requirements

• Students must reside in the City of Boston and meet all residency requirements of the Boston Public Schools
• Preference given to siblings of students currently enrolled in BDEA
• Students are between the ages of 16 and 23
• Student or guardian must sign school compact
• Students must attend an informational interview
